\nGET THE MESSAGE
\nA. INTRODUCTION
\nThe island of Conversazione has three small villages \u2013 Chattalotte, Havachat and
\nChitterchatter. The people of Chattalotte need to send an urgent message to Havachat, however
\nthere are large obstacles separating each village. The message can only be delivered via
\nChitterchatter. A communication system needs to be constructed to get the message through.
\nB. CHALLENGE
\nYour team must design and build a communication system to enable a message (carried by a
\nsmall ball) to reach Havachat via Chitterchatter, where it is briefly delayed. Once the message
\nhas been sent on its way no team member can interact with or touch it until it has reached
\nHavachat.
\nThe system must send the message over two obstacles and needs to include:
\n1. A launcher to propel the message from Chattalotte over the first obstacle
\n2. The means to have the message spend some time in Chitterchatter
\n3. The means to get the message over the second obstacle
\n4. The means to trap or catch the message in Havachat after the second obstacle

\nC. PRESENTATION
\nDuring your presentation your team must:
\n1. Explain the importance of the message and why it needs to be sent to Havachat
\n2. Describe the obstacles and explain why they are there
\n3. Explain the reason why the message needs to go through Chitterchatter
\n4. Demonstrate your communication system
\nBefore you commence your presentation you must present the following written
\ninformation to the judges:
\n\u2022 A single copy of your script
\n\u2022 Design plans showing the key features of your communication system
\n\u2022 Your completed copies of the Cost Form, Outside Assistance Form and Presentation
\nSkills Form
\nD. LIMITATIONS
\nRefer also to those listed in the 2009 Instruction Manual.
\n1. The total time for setting up, performing the Challenge solution and clearing away is ten
\nminutes.
\n2. The judges or room monitor will indicate when your performance time is to begin and
\nwhen nine minutes have elapsed. At ten minutes your performance will be stopped.
\n3. A minimum of four team members must be within the performance area at all times.
\n4. The team members who are performing must be visibly inside the 3m x 3m performance
\narea.
\n5. Only items listed under \u2018Allowable Materials\u2019 may be used for costumes and props.
\n6. Overall costs are limited to $75.00 in accordance with the 2009 Instruction Manual
\n7. The ball (supplied by the team) which carries the message must be less than 6 cm in
\ndiameter
\n8. The obstacles supplied by the judges (empty A4 copy paper boxes: 305 x 250 x 220 mm)
\nmust be placed one each between Chitterchatter and the other two villages
\nNote: The team must position the obstacles and label the locations of the villages
\nwithin the 10 minute presentation time. The team should make allowance in their
\ncommunication system for whatever floor surface could be encountered in a
\npresentation venue.
\n9. The message must pass over the obstacles which must be placed so they stand 305 mm
\nhigh
\n10. No part of the communication system can extend over the obstacles and no part, except
\npart of the launcher, can stand higher than 200 mm above the floor
\n11. The message must leave the launcher at Chattalotte at no more than 100 mm above the
\nfloor, drop to within 100 mm of the floor in Chitterchatter, and finish in Havachat at no
\nmore than 100 mm above the floor
\n12. Up to three attempts may be made to successfully transmit the message. (For a
\nsuccessful attempt there must not have been any further interaction by the team with the
\nsystem or message between the release of the message at Chattalotte and its arrival at
\nHavachat.)
\n13. Additional points (see scoring) will be awarded for each second, up to 10, that the
\nmessage spends in Chitterchatter, i.e. between when it passes over the first and second
\nobstacles, as part of a successful attempt. (Teams are encouraged to count out the time.)
\nE. SCORING
\nYou will be awarded points according to the following criteria.
\n1 The creativity and originality of the explanations of the importance
\nof the message and why it needs to be sent to Havachat 0 to 20 points
\n2 The creativity and originality of the description of the obstacles and
\nthe explanation of why they are there 0 to 10 points
\n3 The creativity and originality of the reason why the message needs
\nto go through Chitterchatter 0 to 10 points
\n4 Ingenuity, creativity and elegance of the communication system
\n0 to 20 points
\n5 Successful transmission of the message on the first (60), second (40),
\nor third (20) attempt 0 to 60 points
\n6 Bonus points (4 per second that the ball remains in Chitterchatter
\nbefore successfully arriving in Havachat) 0 to 40 points
